Writing and Reading Activities

Writing-wise, I have some ideas bouncing around for a few gonzo shorts, but nothing is gelling just yet. I spent my allowance this month subscribing to Fantasy and Interzone. I'd let the Interzone subscription lapse because of the move, but I'm up on it again.

I've read more than half of the Fantasy issue (#5, I think). I can really tell that they're trying to market it for a female audience. So far, I enjoyed Samantha Henderson's story and Leah Bobet's also. I have yet to read Amber's, but I'm sure I will like that, because I have always loved her work, especially when I can understand it!

I actually feel a little bit better about having shut down the Fortean Bureau, having read this magazine, because it looks like they've taken the the same authors we enjoyed, and I'm glad to see that someone is sharing their work with the reading public. And I guess it figures that they would like some of my writing as well. I can definitely say that the authors for the FB have influenced my own writing.

I'm still planning to write my YA fantasy set in 1972 Topeka this summer, tentatively titled Prince Starling. This was the book that I was starting to write when my father was diagnosed with cancer. The problem is, it's heavily based on his childhood. It became impossible to write as he got more ill, but I am convinced that writing this book will be the best way to honor his memory and to motivate myself to write the best damn book I am capable of at this stage in my development as a person and a writer. I'm going to tear out my heart for this one, but it's going to be worth it.
