We Live in the Future: AI Lawyer Practices Without License

I am still not sure I believe this one. An appeals court has ruled that a piece of software is too complicated to just be a clerical tool and has decided that it is an expert system practicing law without a license.

The software did, indeed, go far beyond providing clerical services. It determined where (particularly, in which schedule) to place information provided by the debtor, selected exemptions for the debtor and supplied relevant legal citations. Providing such personalized guidance has been held to constitute the practice of law.

Which all sounds great, but the software got a guy busted, so it must not have been very good at practicing law. Can it take the bar?
