Photo of the Day: Jailed
I was looking for a photo in the archives that expresses how cruddy I feel this morning, but I couldn't find anything right, so I settled on this guy. I used to love zoos as a child, but after a recent trip to the Denver Zoo, I have decided that I can't stand them. I don't know why I have so much empathy for the animals now. I especially can't stand looking at the elephants in their 1/2 acre enclosures, knowing how much space they really need, and just how smart they are.

It's a tough area for me, because I do think that zoos serve an important purpose in education and awareness. But I am more and more of the opinion that elephants should never be kept in zoos unless than can provide very large habitats.
The Detroit zoo sent their elephants to live out west on a reserve, so some zoos have accepted that reality as well.
