A general state of Jer
I'm cruising along on my freelance projects right now, which is making me feel good and productive outside of the day job. But for the past month, I've found my thinking directed more and more towards my writing. I've been jotting down little notes here and there, and I have ideas for short stories backing up. It feels like all this focus on other things is putting fuel in my tank. This is a good feeling after running on empty for a couple of years.
I have two projects left. I will probably finish them sometime around Christmas. After that, I am going to start dedicating a portion of every day to my writing, with the eventual goal of ramping up to working on a novel-length piece. I'm terrified of it, honestly. It's the biggest challenge I have faced yet. I wrote one novel-length piece of fiction while I was in Africa for a semester abroad. It was an atrociously bad piece, and the only way I got it done was by living in a country with no TV or internet and 4 hours of electricity a day.
As far as day jobs go, I'm really tempted to work up an application to Bioware Austin. This would entail building a module in the old Neverwinter Nights engine, which I am familar with, but while I am comfortable writing stories, I find myself blocked when I try to think of something that could work in that format. Which is probably a testament to my viability as an interactive games writer. But then again, I really want to give it a shot. So perhaps I will. Long term thinking.
In the short term, I'm meeting another local writer tonight for coffee. It should be fun to get together with someone new and talk shop.
