Nepotism in SF?

Is There Nepotism in Science Fiction? by Carol Pinchefsky - Intergalactic Medicine Show

This article is going to make the rounds like crazy today. Great link bait on the part of IGMS. My thoughts on nepotism in the field is this: It might help you get a sale here or there. It really helps when you know editors and they have anthologies that are invitation only. But nobody builds a career strictly on nepotism. For those who are still struggling to make their first sale, the little bit of nepotism may really frustrate or piss them off, but unfortunately, it's a social industry, just like every other industry.

I used to rail against this kind of thing when I first started out, but now I know a lot of editors here and there. It doesn't really help very much, thank Dog. I don't really want to publish crap just because the editor is a friend of mine. I trust the editors that know me personally to give it to me straight, and I think they do. However, I don't deny that knowing the editors at all hasn't helped me in some ways.

It's one of those "if you can't beat them, join them" kind of things. I highly recommend joining them, and as quickly as possible, if you're basically crazy and want to make a career in genre fiction. You might as well get to know the other inmates of the sanitarium.
