Read: A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde
3. "A Woman of No Importance" by Oscar Wilde
I figured I would start numbering my reads like other people. I am curious how many books/plays I will get through in the year. Okay, so this was short and hardly counts as a book, but I am going to count it because this is my blog and I make the rules. I will probably also count issues of magazines. Because I can, that's why!
Anyway. Sarah tried to convince me to read one of his better known plays, such as "An Ideal Husband" or "The Importance of Being Earnest." I should have probably taken her advice. But no, I wanted to read something I was completely unfamiliar with. "A Woman of No Importance" is a heavy-handed message play, loaded with speeches and moralizing. It seemed to me as if Oscar was lecturing the upper classes of England with this play. It's mildly funny, but I don't think it really classifies as a comedy. It has the occasional great line, but it only hints at the greatness to come in his work.
I liked Hester, and I liked the digs she got in on the catty society women. But overall, huge chunks of the play were, well, boring.
