Everyone in America is in the Middle Class

Britain vs. America, views

Here's an interesting graph showing the usual disparities between Britain and the U.S. on things like religion and evolution.

What I found most fascinating is that Americans are more interested in seeing taxes cut for the middle class than the poor, and in the UK, it's the reverse. I've often heard that the great marketing success story in the U.S., the lie that our economy has been built upon, has been convincing everyone, rich and poor, that they are in the "middle class." Nobody wants to admit they're poor. Nobody wants to admit they're rich. Think this data supports that notion, the great stretch to be "middle." I'm always astounded when people tell me they're middle class and at the same time, admit to making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. (Although I suppose where you live dictates your 'class' to a certain degree.)

We're not just ignorant of class distinctions in our country. We're cognitively dissonant.
